Finding regional markets in late 18th century France

Guillaume Daudin, Edinburgh University / OFCE / Sciences Po

This version: September 14th, 2006

This paper determines the extent and nature of regional markets in France at the end of the 18th century. To accomplish this aim, it rehabilitates an exceptional source on trade in non-homogenous goods: the Tableaux du Maximum. The first part presents this source. The second part presents the data themselves. The third part shows the data are plausible by submitting them to a gravity study. The fourth part explores different measure for market integration and determines the existence of regional markets.
